Winnebago County began scheduled roadway maintenance work on Monday, May 18, as part of the 2026 construction and pavement‑preservation program. Two treatments began the same day: Farhner’s Rapid Penetrating Emulsion (RPE) project and CAM’s Reclamite rejuvenating fog seal project. Both treatments are intended to extend pavement life and protect previous roadway investments.
The Friends of Pilot Knob State Park will host two events at the park this Saturday, May 23. To kick off the day, the group will serve pancakes in the park from 8-9:30 a.m. for a free will donation, located at the campground gazebo.

Puckerbrush 5K Color Run & Walk at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 18. The 5K will start at the corner or J and Clark streets. The event is part of the 40th Annual Puckerbrush Days Celebration in Forest City.
The Forest City Public Library will host Michelle Sprout Murray on Tuesday, June 2, from 2-3 p.m.
Murray is the author of the book “Amazing Iowa.” This book contains 80 stories about Iowa firsts, famous Iowans, curiosities and oddities, sports vignettes, dark tales, and a plethora of pictures besides.
The Forest City Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center will host a ribbon cutting for AG’s Bakes on Wednesday, May 27 at 11:30 a.m. at the Chamber office, located at 106 S. 4th St. in Forest City.
A fast-moving storm brought destruction across the area on Sunday night, May 17, with winds and a suspected tornado damaging buildings, power lines, and trees.
Josie Bowers, a senior at North Iowa High School, has been a valued helper at the Buffalo Center Public Library throughout her senior year. Josie is great at organizing, preparing crafts for youth programs, and processing new books – all skills that are essential to keeping the library running smoothly. Her friendly personality and eagerness to lend a hand have made her a joy to work with for our staff.
Cub Scout Pack 4445 in Buffalo Center will once again assist the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 21 with the annual Poppy Days in Buffalo Center. Mayor Rick Hofbauer signed a proclamation designating May 18-26 as Poppy Days and the Scouts will have poppies and donation buckets at local stores during those dates. North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) recognized 56 student leaders at the 36th annual Pathways to Success event held April 22 in the North Iowa Community Auditorium. Honorees were nominated by NIACC faculty and staff for their academic achievement, positive attitude, character, teamwork, and ability to inspire others.
The Thompson Public Library will hold a Memorial Day program and lunch on Monday, May 25 at the Branding Iron’s Round-Up Room in Thompson. The program will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch served from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
The meal will include pork burgers, hot dogs, chips, beans, bars, and beverages for a freewill donation.

The Forest City Public Library is partnering with the Forest City Ambulance Service for a First Aid Safety Fair. The event will be held Thursday, May 28, at the Emergency Medical Services building on Highway 69 from 5-7 p.m.
